Standard, Reduced & Zero VAT Rates

Most VAT countries don't charge one flat rate on everything — they apply different rates depending on the category of goods or services:

  • Standard Rate — applies to most goods and services by default.
  • Reduced Rate — applies to specific categories governments choose to tax more lightly, such as domestic energy, certain foods, or children's items (varies significantly by country).
  • Zero Rate — technically still VAT-taxable (0%), commonly applied to essentials like most food, books, and children's clothing in several countries. This is different from being VAT-exempt entirely.

Select the rate category that matches what you're pricing, or simply overwrite the rate field with your own figure.

Do I Need to Register for VAT?

Most countries only require businesses to register for VAT once their annual taxable turnover crosses a set threshold — below that, registration is usually optional. Thresholds vary widely by country and change periodically, so this tool lets you enter your own known threshold to check against your turnover, rather than relying on a number that might be outdated. Always confirm the current threshold with your local tax authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this VAT Calculator free to use?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up required. Calculate as many amounts as you need.

What's the difference between Zero-rated and VAT-exempt?

Zero-rated goods are still technically within the VAT system (taxed at 0%), so related input VAT can usually still be reclaimed. Exempt goods sit outside the VAT system entirely, and input VAT generally can't be reclaimed. This calculator handles zero-rated (0%) calculations; exemption rules depend on your local tax law.

Why do I need to enter my own registration threshold?

VAT thresholds vary by country and change over time. Rather than risk showing you an outdated figure, this tool asks for your current threshold so the comparison is always accurate.

Is VAT the same as GST?

They work almost identically (a consumption tax added at each stage of the supply chain), but different countries use different names. Countries using "GST" terminology are covered by our GST Calculator, which also includes India's CGST/SGST/IGST split.
